Amazon Product Ratings - Are They Worth Anything? Are They TRUE?

I have ordered many products from Amazon.com. Even though Amazon offers a good return policy, I still check out the reviews of the product I'm looking for.

IS IT WORTH YOUR TIME TO CHECK THE REVIEWS?

In a nutshell, NO, and let me tell you why.
People who sell on Amazon can, and frequently do, hire independent freelancers to leave product reviews. I was recently hired to do just that job.

The client sent me the product. She was very generous because she let me keep it. I had to try the product a few times, and then leave a review for it on Amazon. I was supposed to be as honest as possible, but still leave good feedback. It was an OK product, but it was something I'd never buy. It had a nice, clean design, so I hyped up the design part of it. It was something that was minimally useful - I played that down. I gave the product a 5-star review, although it probably deserved a 2- or 3-star review for doing what it was supposed to do.

My advice - when you look at Amazon reviews, look specifically for the ones that are not so good - that way you'll know that they were written by a real, unpaid person.
