Local craft stores are likely to carry the items you are looking for. They are a great option for projects that must be completed in a pinch. The problem is they are much more expensive.
Take this button kit on the right. It's will do the trick but you will pay $3.99 for 5 buttons. That equates to 80 cents per button. Purchasing the supplies online may take a bit longer to receive... but it will save you tons!

You can get flat back or wire back, with or without the tool for setting the buttons and with or without a template. If you wanted to match the set pictures above you would select, Wire back in size 30 with a tool added. This would cost you $8.95 for 25 buttons. That makes the cost roughly 35 cents per button with is more than 50% cheaper then running to the local craft chain.
